The Australian Medal was held on Saturday, 11 and Sunday, 12 January 2020. 96 entrants from Royal Sydney, The Lakes, New South Wales and The Australian competed in the event which is held over 36 holes of stroke play from the medal course (blue tees).
Saturday offered up tough conditions with strong southerly winds kicking in from the early hours of the morning. Robert Chambers Jnr (Royal Sydney, Handicap 5) started the event well taking the first round lead with a net 70, ahead of Adam Coull (The Lakes, 1) at net 72 and Glenn Patterson (The Australian, 7) at net 73.
Patrick Goffin (New South Wales) recorded a hole in one at the tough 4th hole during round one. This was Patrick’s 3rd career hole in one and he was awarded a painting of the hole to commemorate this achievement.
The top 60 net scores qualified for round 2 on the Sunday and conditions were benign before the smoke and some much needed rain set-in on the back 9.
Adam Coull got off to a hot start on Sunday birding the 1st & 7th holes and his opponents couldn’t keep up with him. A further two birdies along with two bogies on the inward nine propelled Coull ahead as Chambers Jnr could not match his round one form. A net total of 141 strokes secured a 7 stroke victory for Adam and the Champion was awarded a set of AGC Waterford Crystal Tumblers and a $300 Golf Shop voucher for the win.
Alexander Harris (Royal Sydney, 8) bettered his round one score of 75 by 2 strokes to finish as the runner-up on a count-back with a net total of 148 strokes. The 2017 Champion, Jeffrey Williams (The Australian, 7), had two consistent rounds of 74 to claim the third place prize. Adam Coull won the minor scratch prize comfortably with gross scores of 73 & 70 winning by 5 shots over Alex Katholos (The Lakes).
