Congratulations to Denis Morrissey (The Australian – Handicap 15) who won the 2026 Australian Medal with a 36-hole total of 142 strokes net.

A full field of 96 players from The Australian GC, New South Wales GC, The Lakes GC & Royal Sydney GC commenced round 1 on Saturday morning with overcast skies and a sprinkle of rain.

After the completion of round 1, there was a three-way tie for the lead with Denis Morrissey (The Australian – Handicap 15), past-Champion John Frechtling (The Australian – Handicap 13) & Neville Spry (Royal Sydney – Handicap 7), each recording a net score of 69 strokes.

Matthew Giles (The Australian) & Edward Procter (Royal Sydney) were equal leaders after the first round for the minor scratch prize, both signing for 73 strokes (+1 over par).

A special congratulations also to Michael Youlden (The Lakes) who recorded a hole in one on the 4th hole during round 1.

The top 60 available players by net score qualified for round 2 on the Sunday. Conditions were excellent despite an overnight thunderstorm, with daybreak revealing sunny skies, no wind and warm temperatures.

After a shaky start, Denis Morrissey played solid golf throughout the bulk of his round, recording a total of seven net birdies to back up his first round with a net 73 for round two. His 36-hole winning total of 142 stokes net earned him a pair of Waterford Crystal Tumblers and a $300.00 Golf Shop voucher.

John Frechtling, the 2021 Champion, did his best to keep up with Denis, but despite 4 net birdies on his back nine, a triple on the par 5, 14th, kept him out of top honours. He claimed the runner-up prize of $200.00 with a total of 145 strokes net.

Another past champion (2009) Matthew Giles (The Australian – Handicap +1), played an impressive tournament with a 36-hole net total of 146 strokes to win the 3rd place prize. He had 7 birdies over the two-days and ended up 1-shot behind the Scratch winner which was current Club Champion, Harrison Glenday. Harrison opened his second round with Eagle-Birdie and then birdied the last two holes to sign for 69 gross and win the scratch event by 1-stroke with 143 total. Well-deserved with nine birdies and an eagle over the weekend.
