Congratulations to Stephen Klotz (Royal Sydney GC, Handicap 10) who won The Australian Medal for 2024.
The Australian Medal was first held in 1966 and was originally open to Members of The Australian Golf Club and Royal Sydney Golf Club. In 2014, Members of The Lakes Golf Club and New South Wales Golf Club were also invited to participate.
The event was played over 36-holes on Saturday, 6 & Sunday, 7 January as stroke play from the medal course (blue tees). Conditions were pleasant early with light Southerly winds that clocked around to the East throughout the day. Timothy Ross (Royal Sydney, handicap 9) had a 3-shot lead after round 1 with a great score of net 68 ahead of five other players who recorded net 71. A triple bogie was the only real blemish on his scorecard to accompany 15 pars and two bogies.
The top 60 available players qualified for the second round and again conditions were prime, this time with light North-East winds and fresh pin locations to test the players.
Tom Brady (The Australian, handicap 11) recorded the best score of round 2 with a net 69 to race up the leaderboard. He was the Clubhouse leader until Stephen Klotz came in with a net 72 to lead by one stroke with 146 total. The leaders from the final three groups all fell away as they could not repeat their scoring efforts from the first round.
Stephen was crowned the winner for 2024 and took home a set of Waterford Crystal Tumblers plus a $300.00 Golf Shop voucher.
Congratulations to Dave Storey (New South Wales GC) who won the scratch event with rounds of 74 & 77 for a +7 over par total of 151. Dave was awarded a $150.00 Golf Shop voucher.
